If left to grow on their own, both can reach several feet in size. If you want to create an herb garden in your backyard, consider how large your herb plants will grow. I have rooted oregano right in the garden by covering the cutting with a flowerpot for a week (the pot protects the little plant from sun until it has time to grow roots).

What herbs can be grown together?

So, roll up your sleeves, gather your gardening tools, and join us as we dive into the captivating realm of herb garden ideas. Get ready to infuse your life with flavors, fragrances, and the simple joys of nurturing nature’s finest offerings, right in the comfort of your own space. In this article, we’ll embark on a horticultural exploration, delving into a plethora of herb garden ideas that cater to various tastes, spaces, and levels of expertise. Whether you’re an urban dweller with limited balcony space or a suburban gardener blessed with a sprawling backyard, there’s an herb garden idea waiting to be embraced. Rosemary is not consistently winter hardy beyond Zone 7, and cold winter winds can damage oregano, sage and tarragon, even in areas where they’re rated hardy. Or dig and store only rosemary, and surround your other perennial herbs with a 12-inch-tall wire cage filled with loose straw or pine needles.

Then you can turn the voids into the perfect place for growing small herb plants. You’ll need to block off the underside of the void so the potting soil doesn’t fall through. Pallets are great because you can customize them to work with your space. These are hardy herbs that can handle the changing seasons and cold weather.

LOw growing curly-leafed parsley and chives make great edging plants. It's often said that you should position your herbs as close to your kitchen as possible, so they're readily available to pick when you're cooking. But the main thing to remember is that most herbs grow best in a sheltered, sunny spot. Some herbs, however, will grow happily in shade and are listed below. You can also plant herbs near entertaining or seating areas, where the aroma of their leaves can be enjoyed. Find out how to create a herb garden – in a dedicated plot, in a raised bed or in containers.

Then, draw marks for the four threaded rod holes that are 1-1/2 inches from the cut edges of the board and one inch in from the sides. Transfer this layout for the rod holes to the center of the base (A) and top cap (C) so all the rod holes align from top to bottom. As I continued the process of creating my indoor herb garden, I knew wood was the first obvious choice for my frame. I chose to use threaded rods along with washers and nuts to support the weight of the potted herbs and make it so I could adjust the height of the pots. They get packed together tightly in pots and can suffer from crowding.

Boost perennials growing in pots by scraping away some of the compost and replacing with fresh in spring, or repot them in fresh compost. Divide chives and tarragon each second spring, and top dress or re-pot woody Mediterranean herbs, such as rosemary. You can pack a ton of herbs into this 3-tiered corner herb garden, a 3’x3’ L-shaped planter for herbs and flowers. If you have a lot of deck or patio space, give yourself a challenge with this impressive cedar build.

This photo is an example of a great small herb garden design that is very easy to achieve. Individual pots of herbs and flowers are grouped together in baskets. When designing with herbs the first thing to consider after growing requirements is growth habit.

This will result in larger plants that have more leaves for use during cooking. By now you probably have visions of your favorite cooking herbs dancing in your head. Gayle Sathre-Zimmerman, owner of Blossom Farm in Columbia Station, Ohio, suggests including a variegated plant, or one with dark leaves, to enhance the visual appeal of your herb garden.

Install a Grow Light

You will need to line the box with sturdy plastic, such as an old compost bag, and include drainage holes so the soil is free draining and your herb garden doesn't become waterlogged. Fill with good quality, peat-free, organic multi-purpose compost, and get planting your herbs. First and foremost, they allow you to grow a wide variety of plants even if you have limited horizontal space. By utilizing vertical surfaces, you can make the most of every inch available, whether you have a small balcony or a backyard with little ground space. Additionally, vertical gardens provide better air circulation, which can help prevent diseases and pests.

That ebb and flow of resources is how you can get away with having fewer families than available job assignments. You can have a family work on a farm during the autumn, and then swap them to a forager’s hut come spring while the crops grow. Or you can move a family back and forth between a clay mining pit and the clay furnace that turns that clay into rooftiles. Keeping your town supplied is as much a exercise in building up a surplus as it is in laying out your town carefully — we’ve got a guide to how marketplaces distribute goods here. Gardens and the other burgage plot extensions cost Regional Wealth to build.

Most Mediterranean herbs come back year after year, and many are evergreen. Cut some corners and add some style by using sculpted deck posts as the legs on the raised herb garden planter. The plans walk you through every step of cutting your pressure-treated lumber, creating your reinforced frame, and readying your plastic basin. Finish up with a coat of stain and hanging hooks to keep your herb garden tools readily on hand. Tiered herb gardens can get complex, but you can take it back to basics with this beautiful and abundant 3-tiered herb garden.

You could have a small sitting area and a brick or paver path leading to it. You’ll be able to sit outside and enjoy the natural perfume of your herb plants. You could create some cute little signs that label each herb to stake into your garden.

It could be a freestanding wall that you can access from both sides. Once your plants are growing, they’ll act as a barrier that blocks an area from view and dampens sound. Fit a basic herb garden layout into a 12-square-foot area so you can grow kitchen herbs in the space nearest your kitchen door.

There are small round pots or long rectangular bins that come with hooks on them. This setup works well because you can easily re-pot and move your herbs around without disrupting other herbs. You could start your herb seeds indoors and then transfer them to a hanging pot when they’re big enough. If you have open shelving in your kitchen, why not line up a few mason jars for growing herbs indoors? This will breathe life into your kitchen, give you some easy decor, and always keep fresh herbs within reach.

Spend time talking with family and friends about why you’re taking on this project, ahead of diving into and drawing up your specific garden design aims. This will help you determine whether you should need to employ a professional garden designer or complete the work yourself. Designing a garden yourself is a satisfying, pocket-friendly option that will allow you to get really creative. Hermès and his new store in the Miami Design District

"What Craig is doing in the district is going to significantly change that whole area, and will become a major draw over a longer period of time," he said. "We think other luxury retailers will join us."Already, Louis Vuitton exited Bal Harbour at the end of May, when its lease expired, and announced its intention to open a Design District store in 2014. Other luxury brands in residence at the Design District include Christian Louboutin and Marni. Robins has said his goal is to sign leases with 20 to 30 luxury retailers over the next five years, and he's targeting other LVMH brands, as well as Prada, Chanel and Gucci. After shuttering its longtime Bal Harbour, Fla., store, the brand had operated in a temporary space around the corner in the Miami Design District since 2013.

The venue features distinct retail and exhibition zones, highlighted by industrial design elements such as chrome rails and strip lighting, and launches with the video installation Catastrophe Colours by Gonzalez Haase AAS. The products are all formulated with natural ingredients and are designed to help you look and feel your best. Hermès on Thursday unveiled a permanent store in the Miami Design District — a three-story, 10,000-square-foot flagship — in the ongoing gentrification of the 18-square-block shopping district.

The latter category, which occupies 1,000 square feet, links to the neighborhood’s home and design heritage. Saint-Louis’ adjacent shop-in-shop, whose additional 646 square feet can be accessed by a separate entrance, displays limited-edition pieces like Opercule boxes with colorful lids through a collaboration with Adrien Rovero. The store showcases 14 product categories ranging from leather goods0–including the coveted Birkin and Kelly handbags–to iconic silk scarves, ties and men’s cashmere suits.

Art galleries

The centerpiece of this floor is the large, swooping staircase inviting visitors up to the second and third floors. Hermès brings enduring craftsmanship, rich heritage and timeless Parisian style to the boutique at Miami Design District. Encompassing all 14 product categories of the House, ranging from leather goods, such as the iconic Birkin and Kelly handbags, to men's cashmere suits and fine silk scarves and ties, each object is made by hand, employing the same technique and knowledge practiced nearly two centuries ago. We love the aqua tables outside and the pretty pink bar stools inside… basically, a restaurant designed for IG. What other neighborhood can tout a parking garage that’s its own standalone work of art?

Despite challenges in the market, the Miami Design District continues to attract luxury and contemporary tenants. Scarves, jewelry and watches are on the second floor, and women’s wear, handbags and the equestrian collection on the third. The Saint Laurent boutique’s marble facade is a must-snap that screams luxury. A New York court dismissed a lawsuit by the Judd Foundation against Tina Kim Gallery of New York and Kukje Gallery of South Korea over fingerprints left on a Donald Judd sculpture. Despite the galleries paying $680,000 for the damage in 2021, the lawsuit sought an additional $170,000 and damages, but was deemed untimely by Judge Nancy M. Bannon due to being filed four years after the damage was discovered. The foundation plans to appeal the decision, emphasizing its commitment to safeguarding Judd’s artistic legacy.

The collection includes furniture, lighting, rugs, and décor pieces that are both stylish and timeless. Whether you’re looking for something modern or something more classic, the Hermes Home Collection has something for everyone. Feting its tropical locale, the house issued accessories such as the Oran sandal and Pliplat handbag in exclusive colors like rosy salmon, yellow and blue.

After Louis Vuitton and Fendi, Hermès heads to the destination for high-lifestyle to open its third flagship in the US. The French fashion house threw a glorious, tropical-themed gala to commemorate the opening of its grand Design District store.Located at 163 E. 39th St., the light and airy three-story shop features a white concrete and glass facade. The array of products reflects the Florida market, like flamingo print scarves and brightly colored items, said Peter Malachi, Hermès’ senior vice president of communications. Though a crisp contemporary feeling defines the interior, there are numerous nods to Hermès’s heritage of craftsmanship, classic materials, and timeless style. Near the entrance, signature leather accents abound in the home section, evoking the brand’s roots as a harness- and saddlemaker. In the first-floor Saint-Louis crystal shop, glassware and other vessels shimmer on darkly stained oak shelves. The jewelry-and-watch room on the second level, meanwhile, is distinguished by warm cherry paneling.

The brand is trading Bal Harbour Shops for an area with a hip undercurrent that’s in the throes of gentrification. By the end of 2017,  Dacra will have 120 stores open on its own property, and other property owners will have another 40. At the top of store’s rooftop sits the Hermès symbol of a horse, one of just six stores in the world to have it . “The fact that they chose Miami as one of six cities in the world is a huge statement for us,” Robins said. “We felt it was definitely a market where we wanted to make a significant investment,” Chavez said.

Curated by Terence Riley, the structure is a mashup of contributions from artists and architects including WORKac, Clavel Arquitectos, Nicolas Buffe, J.Mayer H., and K/R. Make sure you snap the structure from all five angles for the full experience. Claudette Johnson, a Black British artist renowned for her pastel and watercolor portraits, and Jasleen Kaur, known for her installations exploring her Scottish Sikh heritage, are among the nominees for this year’s Turner Prize, announced at Tate Britain. The nominees, which also include Pio Abad and Delaine La Bas, have all held significant exhibitions within the past year and will be featured in a group show at Tate Britain from September 25 to February 16.

With the addition of the Hermes boutique, the Miami Design District is sure to become an even bigger destination for luxury shoppers. “We’re starting to get some cool brands in the contemporary category with Alice & Olivia,” said Robins. Amid the transformation of the district, Dacra now has 50 retail businesses open and other property owners  — including Thor Equities and TriStar Capital — have an additional 12 stores open, Robins said.

On the first floor, signature leather accents, namely a harness and saddle maker, evoke the brand’s roots. Items for the home, the brand’s furniture and accessories are displayed against a backdrop of warm walnut hues. Long before it was known as the Design District, the swath of streets sandwiched between Miami’s Little Haiti and Wynwood neighborhoods was dotted with low-lying white buildings. So when Hermès decided to open a flagship in the increasingly upscale area—joining a growing array of global fashion boutiques and high-end interiors showrooms—the French luxury brand aimed for a design that would be an elegant riff on those humble earlier structures. The Hermes boutique in the Miami Design District offers the latest collections of the brand’s fashion and accessories.

The Hermes Miami Design District boutique is also home to a variety of events. From fashion shows and trunk shows to book signings and cocktail parties, the boutique is always hosting something special. Some of the tenants, who requested anonymity, have said business has been slow to take off in the district, with sparse shopper traffic. Robins admitted that “the business in Miami has been a bit challenged, with the Brazilians and the Russians,” a reference to Brazil’s economic downturn and Russia’s prolonged recession.

Tourists from Brazil and Russia have been conspicuous consumers of luxury and contemporary goods. Saint Laurent, Loro Piana, Tod’s, Isabel Marant, Joseph, Alice & Olivia, Tory Burch, Sevan Biçakçı, Zilly, Creed, Aesop and sneaker store Be Miami recently signed leases to open stores in the district, according to Craig Robins, the area’s primary landlord. Robins said there’s only one retail space left in the Design District’s current phase. “We’re completely rented,” he said, adding that he’s working on the next phase of the area’s development.

Choose statement lighting

Don’t ever be afraid to err on the side of simplicity when styling an empty corner because often, less is more. Adding a small table to a bathroom or bedroom corner with one or two carefully chosen pieces of home décor can go a long way. "In this powder room I added a small oval French table with a brass candlestick," says Mathews. "I like adding something round or oval into a corner to soften the harsh lines that a corner creates. I also liked the idea of adding a stained wood piece into this otherwise green-painted bathroom." A small hall tree with a few cushions and decor accessories is all that is needed to create an entryway in this small space.

Entryway Ideas for Awkward Spots

Make it easier to enforce your "no-shoes" policy by placing a chair that makes it easy to take them off—and give your entryway a cozier vibe. A space-saving multipurpose seating alternative is a storage ottoman. Dressed in warm, earthy tones, this soaring foyer does more than just nod to the desert beyond. An arched glass door frames the landscape, turning the natural surroundings into a focal point. A pair of Louis chairs and an upholstered bench provide a perch to take a load off and take in the view. Scheck says that one of her favorite budget-friendly entryway upgrades is to throw a vintage or vintage-inspired rug down.

A Modern Entryway That Will Inspire You to Be Tidy

After all, this is the first room your visitors will see upon entry. The main advantage of hallway carpet is the incredible range of decorating possibilities that it offers, thanks to the wide variety of colors and textures, as well as the feeling of warmth underfoot. Plus, it is an instant win for anyone hoping to add a seductive softness to their home’s entrance, or keep a house’s corridors insulated during the winter. In this entryway, a linen-skirted table awaits the mail and other just-in-the-door deliveries while concealing ingenious storage for shoes and boots. On top, rows of large PVC tubing holds flats, sneakers, and flip flops; tall storage below perfectly fits winter boots.

Choose a Half Moon Table

entry way design ideas

‘I always choose an impactful design for an entrance hall and this paper brings real character,’ she explains. In the back entryway of this project by Henriette von Stockhausen of VSP Interiors, the deep mid-grey background is broken up with a rich damask upholstery fabric and elegant antiques. Easy to live with, this hallway paint idea looks beautiful in west- or south-facing rooms while being suitably moody in spaces with less light. Rather than merely being a place you pass through or use a drop zone, an entryway should create a striking first impression and a warm welcome. Think, too, about entryway decor that complements both the hallway and the front porch to make the best impression. For a more formal look, lean on symmetry and a strict color palette to create a sense of grandeur.

Show off your personality right inside the door with colorful entryway decorating ideas. In this small mudroom, tropical wallpaper pairs with dark green built-ins for a bold punch of color. The white ceiling and trim keep the small space from feeling too dark, while a bubblegum-pink light fixture adds an extra touch of whimsy. If you’re not afraid of bold color, consider painting the walls, trim, and ceiling of your foyer in the same vibrant hue.

Small Foyer

It serves as a place to set house keys and other front-door necessities and also creates interest within the entryway itself. Architect James Carter and designer Jane Hawkins opted for a low-ceilinged entry with an up-and-down stair landing in this newly-built (but old-looking) country house. "When you enter, it feels like a tiny cottage. We wanted to delay the drama," says Carter. Not only does this overdyed rug make a statement in this entryway, it's highly functional. Doormats help protect your floors and catch dirt or water from your shoes as you enter. Turn your entryway into a stylish mudroom by building creative storage solutions, like built-in cabinets and benches.

Make a Narrow Space Luxe

So how do you approach decorating an entryway that's capable of accommodating brief, yet heavy traffic? A good place to start is incorporating high-impact decorative accents that set a stylish tone and well-appointed vignettes that say hello from the inside. 'I always advise using really interesting furniture in hallway ideas – a beautiful console table or a sculptural piece,' says Charu Gandhi, founder of Elicyon. A restrained color palette and clean lines create a serene feeling in this modern entryway. Despite the minimal approach, this room has all the essential entryway elements, including a sideboard for shoe storage and a mirror for last-minute touch-ups.

You can use family photos, homemade art pieces, vintage pictures or mementos to show off your personality from the moment visitors enter your home. Making use of what you have is always a good move, and your layout will have quite a bit of say regarding how you can decorate. If you don't have much space to add tables, or even if you want to take a different approach, try using your stairs as a place to display a select few items of dećor. You don't want to go too large with your options or add too many and block the path up the stairway, but a simple plant or a couple of books propped against the wall can add the perfect touch. You should always feel free to make your space personal, so why not display a curated collection?

We love the way this fun, modern light fixture contrasts with the traditional medallion area rug underneath. There's also something to be said for the mini gallery wall and chic console table (aka, a place for all your tchotchkes!). There is no easier way to add pizzaz to your entry than trying out delightful patterns in your decorative choices.

It’s the details that tie a space together, so we sought out some expert advice to give us some ideas. It means the light spreads further and you can save space on the table below. Find out how to recreate this hallway decorating idea in your own home with our guide on how to sand floors. If one of the first things you see when walking into your home is the staircase, try dressing it up a bit. Draping fabric over the stairs (securely held in place to prevent slipping, of course) can add a splash of color and design in an unexpected place. Another option you can try is adding decorative tile to the front of each stair.

The Brentwood Country Mart is a unique collection of fantastic food, charming boutiques, and independent bookstores. Like Westwood, this area is home to a large concentration of young students, along with wealthy families and high-profile residents, due to its close proximity to UCLA. Young professionals appreciate the laid-back atmosphere and low-key nightlife. The beachfront promenades and sidewalks are immaculately maintained, and the beach community is equally so. After an inspection, condo associations will receive a report that includes information about the estimated insurance premium discounts correlated to the current mitigation features and the recommended improvements. This year's election is also going to be different from 2020 in a very big way. Because of the pandemic, mail-in voting was used widely and that contributed heavily to increased turnout. In 2020, 66% of registered voters cast ballots, the highest since 1900. In addition to the Latino population increase in the Southwest, McDonald pointed to the uptick in Asian Americans, and a remigration of Black voters to Georgia as to why those states continue to trend toward Democrats.

This neighborhood averages more than a dozen violent crimes per week—nearly 2 violent crimes per day in a population of slightly fewer than 25,000 residents. Residents of Glendale enjoy plenty of biking, hiking, and general outdoor opportunities in the neighboring Verdugo Mountains and Griffith Park. The violent crime rate sits at 299, while the property crime per capita is 1,005 for 2020. The crime rate in this area is low, and the cost of living is considerably lower. Those who enjoy being outside will instantly feel at ease, with everything from park movies to summer concerts by the sea. Mar Vista is another Los Angeles community with a relatively low crime rate.

It is located on the Westside of Los Angeles, roughly 12 miles from the city center. The high-quality international schools, numerous parks, and public libraries make this neighborhood the ideal choice for young families migrating to the city. Although the community is dominated by the UCLA campus and its 40,000+ UCLA students, the rest of the neighborhood consists of a blend of high-rise apartments, single-family homes, smaller apartments, and office buildings. Combined with the increasing Latino and Asian American population and a remigration to the South of young Black voters, particularly in Georgia, that has meant a reshaping of the electoral map. But they are declining as a share of the population and of the electorate. The increasing population of white, college-educated voters in the state's Research Triangle continues to make the state competitive. The director's frequent collaborations with Denzel Washington are guilty-pleasure entertainments — particularly the dark exploitation-lite of 2004's Man on Fire -- but they're mostly built on a familiar template. Washington's always playing a cool-under-pressure character who's asked to go above and beyond with life and death on the line, and the camera's always following the action with grainy photography and claustrophobically jittery close-ups. It's not a difficult manual to decipher — and with Safe House, Swedish director Daniel Espinosa follows the Scott-Washington playbook with a tedious fidelity.

Brentwood is an incredibly safe area with a 37 percent lower crime rate than the L.A. As one of the greenest places in L.A., Porter Ranch has maintained a crime rate that is approximately 33 percent lower than the city average. Located between Los Feliz and Echo Park, this neighborhood of just under 31,000 has a low crime rate that’s around 30% under the city average, with little crime spillover from the surrounding area. But “absent some ongoing crime, we cannot just go on into Columbia as we see fit,” as Columbia University is private property, he said. Also arrested was Isra Hirsi, daughter of Rep. On Thursday, 113 people were arrested after Shafik sent a letter to New York police requesting its help to break up the encampment that had been set up on campus in support of Gaza.

And with more than 10 violent crimes per week on average, it’s not hard to understand why. Situated in the Westside of Los Angeles, Brentwood is infamous for being the location of the stabbing deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman involved in the O.J. Aside from this crime, the area has a relatively low crime rate and is one of the safest neighborhoods in the city.

The 2012 movie sees Ryan Reynolds playing rookie CIA agent Matt Weston. At the beginning of the film, Weston is living a relatively quiet life managing a safe house in Cape Town, South Africa. He's unsatisfied with his assignment, as he feels it's not giving him the opportunity to move forward in his career. Boasting a crime rate that’s 53 percent lower than the U.S. average and 58 percent lower than California, Sherman Oaks is known as one of the most expensive areas in Los Angeles. Studio City has a population of 40,449 and a crime rate that is around 63 percent lower than the rest. Housing a population of 13,697, Playa Vista is safer than 60 percent of all L.A.

What is your favorite Bramble Berry product and why? Our favorite Bramble Berry product is Champagne Fragrance Oil, hands down. That is to say, it is a full-on sensory experience, whether in the bottle or in soap. Furthermore, in our experience, it blends very well with many other Bramble Berry essentials and fragrances.

During our first holiday season, we encountered a few soapy fails using some holiday fragrance oils. The first batch accelerated and turned into cement before we could even homogenize the ingredients. The second batch had an oil slick on it after setting up, so we used the Hot Process Hero method to rescue it.

Single Oil Cold Process Soap Lather Tests

As of this month, we’ve been soaping for three years. Our journey as soapmakers started shortly after we took a course on cold process soap making. We found that making soap was an enigmatic process; it combined art and chemistry in the most cathartic way, so we knew it had to become a mainstay in our lives. Consequently, we ordered $200 worth of supplies to start and became super addicted. Our newfound hobby was overrunning our lives, and outgrowing our studio apartment, so we decided to turn it in to a business. How did you work through it, and what did you learn?

Preston and Tyler of Sudz by Studz create and sell gorgeous cold process soap, lotion and balms in Sacramento, California. I met Preston at the Central Soapers Workshop last year, where he gave an engaging talk on Instagram and business. I was impressed and inspired by his passion for the industry. Tyler and Preston recently started a clever monthly subscription box called “Soap of the Month,” where customers can receive a bar of limited edition cold process soap. Read the interview with Preston and Tyler below to learn more about their soaping journey and tips for those just starting out. How long have you been soaping for and how did you get started?

Water Discounting Cold Process Soap: How & Why

"Aloe excelsa started it all," he says, stroking its six-foot descendent's downward-curving leaves. Find the soaping temperature that works best for you and stick with it. Also, add your FO/EO to your oils before mixing in the lye solution in order to mitigate unnecessary stress to the reaction. We recently received certification as an LGBT owned business enterprise and are male soapmakers. As for Stud Tyler, he is one of six kids in his family, has a penchant for gnomes, and loves to wear bowties. Stud Preston is an only child, the treasurer for our local Rainbow Chamber of Commerce, and is currently preparing to apply for law school.

Our favorite product to make would have to be cold process soap. Winter is most aloes' bloom season, but at any time of the year at least a few are in flower. He encloses seed capsules with mesh bags so irreplaceable one-of-a-kinds don't hybridize.

Lastly, our initial experience with making beer soap was problematic. Once we added some lye, the beer started overflowing rapidly out of the container. From then on, we made sure to boil the beer before making our lye solution.

Beyond all of the things we’ve mentioned, we love being able to share, as well as use, our bath and body products. Our customers get very personal with our products, which requires a tremendous amount of trust, and we cherish being able to provide them with assurance. Tom Cole grew up around succulents in Santa Barbara, and although his wasn't a gardening family, he recognizes a remarkable aloe when he sees one. When exploring the "odd mountain" near where he lived and worked in East Africa, he ran across native species not seen elsewhere. Two decades ago, Tom brought home seed from a Mozambique aloe that had looked him in the eye (it was that tall).

First, begin with your end goal in mind and make sure it is relevant to your brand audience. Ask yourself, “What do I intend to communicate with this photo and how can I best do that? ” As with most things in life, once you know where you’re going, it’s much easier to get there. Second, gather everything necessary, whether it is lighting or complementary props, to get the perfect shot. Third, accept what tools you have to work with and make them work for you; we used a cellphone camera for our first two years of business (no shame!). Last, once everything is set up to your liking, take photos and review them to see if they are capturing your desired results.

If you visit us at our soapery, you’ll find that we keep a bottle on hand at all times. Also, we highly recommend any silicone mold from Bramble Berry. What tips do you have for taking product photos on Instagram?

Safe House Cast: Every Performer and Character in the Movie

En route, Linklater suggests that Weston has joined Frost, which Barlow refutes. In Cape Town, South Africa, junior CIA officer Matt Weston is serving as a "housekeeper", an operative in charge of securing and maintaining a local CIA safe house in case of an operation. He calls his mentor and immediate superior, David Barlow, and inquires about a station in Paris, where he hopes to follow his live-in girlfriend Ana, a young French physician about to start her residency. Barlow tells him he is likely underqualified for the position, which frustrates Matt as he has not had a "houseguest" during his year long tenure, and thus has been unable to gain field experience. “One of my best friends lives in Dallas, and then I have another best friend that lives in Austin. I had visited both of them multiple times towards the end of the year, and it just felt so different compared to the community that I have in LA.

The neighborhood is notoriously upscale, home to many celebrities entertainment executives, and populated with expensive cars and large mansions. There aren’t any official apartments in the area; instead, it consists of only single-family homes. Once the inspection process of the program is over, associations can apply for mitigation grants that can be used to retrofit the property to make it less vulnerable to hurricane damage.

Neighborhoods, making it an ideal location for families, young professionals, singles, and students. Though shoppers and tourists frequent this district for its blocks upon blocks of stores, Forbes lists the Toy District as one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the United States. With more than 230 violent crimes per year and an estimated per capita rate of nearly 350 per 1,000 residents, it’s easy to see why. This area has just under 5 violent crimes per week on average, and just over that same number of property crimes per week. Vermont Knolls has averaged 10.5 violent crimes per week since June 2021, and just less than 10 property crimes per week in the same period.

More recently, Portar Ranch has become infamous because of a massive natural gas leak that occurred and chased families out of the area for several months. Located in the northern central portion of Los Angeles’ Westside region, Westwood is a safe, tight-knit neighborhood with a large student population. It also has a large number of young professionals and graduates due to the fact that the community is home to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Bel Air has one of the highest median incomes in the city and is not incredibly diverse. While there aren’t many shopping or dining options within the neighborhood, it isn’t far from others that do.

This is a crucial safety point when sitting in bars, restaurants, and cafes. Ironically, Brentwood is the neighborhood where the OJ Simpson murder case occurred in 1994. Typically described as a quiet neighborhood close to the beach, Playa Del Ray is an excellent place to raise a family, with plenty of outdoor activities. "I would be very surprised if we have a turnout rate like we saw in 2020," McDonald said. "And the people who would most likely then not participate ... are going to be these lower-education voters. And so it's going to pose a real challenge to the Trump campaign, to energize these folks yet again to vote in 2020."

And the worst is writer David Guggenheim's insistence on a cheap bait-and-switch so blatantly obvious that the second half of the film becomes a tedious wait for a plot twist everyone will have seen coming half an hour out. He's so cool under pressure (Frosty, get it?) that he lectures the team on the insufficient thread count of the towels they're about to use to waterboard him. Weston, acting as audience proxy, is appropriately horrified at the torture he's witnessing, but it's cut short when the safe house turns out to be not so safe.

Columbia/Barnard Hillel said in a post on X that it doesn’t believe Jewish students should have to leave, but that the university and city should do more to protect students. In a statement to the university community, Shafik said she was “saddened” by the events on campus, and denounced antisemitic language, and intimidating and harassing behavior. The protest and encampment on campus have drawn attention to the right of free speech and the rights of students to feel safe from violence, with a campus rabbi recommending Jewish students return home for their own safety. Carpenter Ants vs Black Ants: What's the Difference?

They fly out to find mates in late spring or early summer, and once they’ve mated, the winged males die. The females shed their wings and start looking for a new place, such as a crack or crevice in some wood, to build a nest and lay eggs. Female carpenter ants lay only one batch of eggs at first, and wait until those hatch and grow into worker ants before laying more.

9 Most Common Signs of a Termite Infestation (And What to Do if You Have One)

To look for nests, the University of Georgia Extension Office recommends that homeowners take a look at any nearby trees that are at least 6 inches in diameter shortly after sundown. If carpenter ants have taken up residence in the tree, it will be possible to see them traveling up and down the trunk with bits of food to take back to the nest. It’s worth noting that carpenter ants bite occasionally, so it’s a good idea for the homeowner to wear shoes and long pants in the yard if carpenter ant trails may be present.

How do I prevent carpenter ants?

It’s common for homeowners to only see a few ants at a time, especially if it’s dry and sunny. However, the majority of the time, they may be tending to their nests. It’s possible that homeowners will not see them very often; however, this doesn’t mean they’ve moved on. It’s more likely that they’re further establishing their nest, especially if they’re in a cool or damp environment. The majority of mature carpenter ant colonies have around 3,000 ants.

You can also use boric acid as an ingredient in do-it-yourself (DIY) ant traps. Mix the powder with something sweet that will attract ants, such as maple syrup or corn syrup. Spread on a flat, disposable surface like cardboard and place in areas where you see ants. The boiling water won’t be enough to kill off the entire colony. For this reason, make sure to treat every ant hole you see within your home’s proximity. White vinegar, available at all grocery stores, is a cheap and effective way to kill and repel ants.

Russell recommends specifically paying attention to areas like bathroom walls where grout is missing or spots where there are plumbing leaks. “The good news is that they’re really considered a nuisance pest,” she says. So while odorous house ants may show up on your kitchen counters or around the shower, they won’t transmit disease or cause any real damage to your home. They don’t form trails, although many may congregate around a food source at once. They burrow intricate tunnels by chewing through the wood and leaving the residue behind as sand-sized particles. We round up common types of ants, from fire to carpenter, and a bit of information about each.

Most importantly, keep a close eye on your property for signs of carpenter ants. Inspect wood on your home for the appearance of small openings or sawdust. And if you suspect you have a carpenter ant infestation, contact a licensed pest professional right away. The sooner carpenter ants are treated, the less serious the damage is likely to be. Ants of the genus Camponotus are known as carpenter ants because they prefer to establish their colonies in galleries excavated from damp or damaged wood.

A professional can also tell the homeowner what damage has been done to their home, if any, so it can be fixed and the home’s structural integrity restored. Carpenter ants rely on pheromone trails to find food sources and to travel. By cleaning surfaces where ants have traveled, you've destroyed this treasure map to your home. You can use essential oils like tea tree, lemon, orange, or cedarwood on a cotton ball to wipe down surfaces to interrupt these trails.

Aphids that feed on indoor plants excrete honeydew, too, which resembles white scale on leaves. Wipe leaves clean to eliminate the food source for ants, and consider placing aphid-killing plant spikes in the soil of any houseplants. Because carpenter ants are bigger than other types of black ants, it requires more poison to kill them.

In natural environments, carpenter ants dwell in both dead and living trees, stumps and rotting logs. However, they may also establish their nests inside of homes and buildings where wood is found, especially where wood has been exposed to severe moisture. Carpenter ants don’t eat wood—they prefer honeydew, a sugary liquid secreted by aphids. In fact, carpenter ants actively “farm” nearby aphids for this food. However, the threat that carpenter ants pose to the structure of your home can be significant.

Termites produce a mud-like material as waste from eating wood, which they’ll leave behind in their nests; carpenter ants only leave behind wood shavings. Holes and tunnels created by termites have a rougher look, whereas those created by ants look smooth and polished. If you’re unsure, contact a pest control professional to perform an inspection. The average cost to hire an ant exterminator for carpenter ants is between $250 and $500, which can be well worth it to ensure that ants are eliminated for good. According to McHale, “A pest professional is valuable in helping you locate the colony.

Many of us have cinnamon in our pantries, but does it work to kill ants? When pests invade your home or business, you don’t need empty promises; you need proven results. At Allswell, we train our technicians to meet the highest standards set forth by the Pest Licensing Board so that you receive the service you need. Carpenter ants have a hard time tunneling through dry, hard wood. It’s much easier for them to tunnel through soft, damp wood, and they build their nests within this type of wood. Outdoors, they build nests within rotting tree stumps or logs, or in wooden posts, decking or fencing that is decaying due to age and water damage. The presence of carpenter ants inside the home typically indicates some part of the home’s interior wood framing is rotting or damaged. Another sign of a carpenter ant infestation is the presence of flying ants.

The black carpenter ant can currently be found in virtually all regions east of the Rocky Mountains. While different types of carpenter ants can be found in almost all areas of the U.S., they are relatively rare in non-forested areas, such as deserts and high mountains. The parent colony, or main colony, is typically located outside and contains the queen, eggs and young. Satellite nests can occur and branch out from the main parent colony, and they only contain workers, mature larvae, and pupae.

Ant Identification: 10 Common Types of Ants

Consulting with a professional exterminator is a good step to controlling these ants. With more than 700 types of ant species in the United States, it's not surprising that ants can quickly become a source of disgust, frustration and concern for homeowners. Unfortunately, most people don't realize that these pests can also pose health and property risks - from food contamination to costly property damage. Beyond cinnamon, there are a few other ways to deter ants from invading your home. "Keeping your surroundings clean, especially your kitchen—will naturally aid in the decrease of ant populations," says Girard. But, if you find yourself dealing with an ant invasion and no cinnamon on hand, try these other methods for deterring and killing ants.

A number of different scenarios are possible.” A professional exterminator can also ensure that there aren’t any ants left behind after eliminating the colony. Even leaving behind a few ants can allow them to rebuild their colony and reestablish a nest inside the home. Unlike termites, which also look to some people like big black ants, carpenter ants don’t actually eat wood.

Camponotus species

These ants (Camponotus laevissimus) are part of the carpenter group of ants in California. Initially attracted by plants in gardens and backyards, these ants make their way inside the house. Their aggressiveness sometimes makes them hard to deal with as they often move their nest from one location of the house to another. This includes other ants and other insects as well as fruits. The ants first start small when building colonies inside of the house.

Signs of a Carpenter Ant Infestation

They will also crawl along overhead wires, shrubs, or tree limbs that touch the building far above the ground. Although carpenter ants first invade wet, decayed wood, they may eventually build paths through dry, undamaged wood, too. Carpenter ants build their nests in various wood sources, including tree stumps, fence posts, firewood or landscaping.

How Much Does an Ant Exterminator Cost?

The Southern Fire ant (Solenopsis xyloni) is the fire ant with the largest distribution in California. It often shares its habitat with other fire ants such as the Golden Fire ant. The Rough Harvester Ant is known for its very specific movements. Common in California, the ants can also be seen in mountainous areas as they are adapted to living both at sea level and high altitude.

And carpenter ants can be finicky and cycle between sweet and oily foods. When any ants enter your home, it’s usually because they’ve discovered food. Black ants form trails between food sources and their colony.

Ants vs. Carpenter Ants vs. Termites

The ants are highly problematic as they often invade various crops and plants such as oranges. Flower buds are often damaged by these ants as they chew these flowers to get to the sweet juice. This type of ant (Prenolepis imparis) is common in coastal states such as California. These are considered invading ants as they’re often found in California homes. The Black Harvester ant (Veromessor pergandei) is a typical harvester ant highly common in California. It harvests seeds and other types of foods it later stores in its nests in small chambers.

Piles of sawdust or wood shavings near baseboards, door jambs, and windowsills can indicate carpenter ants.

However, one or two in the spring or summer does not necessarily mean that you have a problem. Be aware that what looks like flying ants emerging from your home in the spring may, in fact, be termites. Ants found in or near wet or spongy wood, particularly around leaky pipes, drains, walls, or roofing are likely to be carpenter ants. Carpenter ant coloring also can vary, but the most common colors are black or dark brown and can include coloration of reddish-orange or yellow. Worker ants are wingless and are typically 1/4- to 1/2-inch long.

Bicolored Carpenter Ant

If you can identify an outdoor nest that is sending workers inside your home, drench it with an approved insecticide spray (following all label directions). Many people in the US have been shown to develop allergies to these highly venomous ants. In rare cases, people bitten by these ants can even go into anaphylaxis. Formica moki is a species of yellow-golden ants often seen around California homes. This species is considered highly aggressive and a potentially invasive species found inside homes. Colonies that live on the coast have slightly different habits from inland colonies.

They may also inject formic acid into the bite wound, creating a burning sensation. However, this pain will subside and does not pose a significant health threat. Paul Hope is a senior multimedia content creator at Consumer Reports and a trained chef. He covers ranges, cooktops, and wall ovens, as well as grills, drills, outdoor power tools, decking, and wood stains. Diluted neem and products containing neem extract have been reported to not work nearly as well as full-strength neem oil. You may be able to find peppermint oils at your local grocery chain or health food store. Keep peppermint oil out of reach of pets, especially cats, which can become very ill if exposed. It’s often used as a cleaning product, emulsifier, or insect repellant. DIY control methods often involve incorrect procedures that can allow the colony to rebound when surviving members resume their burrowing and foraging.

Periodically inspect wood framing and wood siding near ground level around foundations, and make sure to keep all gaps sealed. Inspect the penetrations where pipes and other services enter the home, as well as the sill plates where the walls meet foundation walls or slabs. Dry up leaks inside and outside the home, and repair any moisture-damaged wood when you find it. Carpenter ants can emit formic acid as a defense against other arthropods, but it poses no danger to humans. People who disturb carpenter ant nests or handle them may detect an odor akin to vinegar, which is acetic acid and has a similar smell.

Wipe down your surfaces, sweep, or vacuum to remove the shed wings and carcasses. And make note of any visible damage so that you know what all needs to be repaired. As there are many types of carpenter ants and common ants in the United States, it’s difficult for someone to rely on color to identify the exact species of ant.

Finding big black ants in your home can be shocking and scary. What exactly are they, how did they get in and what are they looking for? Unfortunately, most big black ants found in people’s homes are carpenter ants. They’re called carpenter ants because they build their homes in wood by chewing and tunneling through it. Much like termites, if they aren’t discovered and eliminated, carpenter ants can cause a lot of hidden structural damage in a home. Cinnamon, and generally anything with a really strong scent, like vinegar or certain essential oils, deters ants by intercepting their pheromone trails, which they use to find food.
